People
W
e are a strange and wonderful Energy in skin, at once beautiful and repulsive, wise and foolish, sound and insane. We make infinite numbers of subtle expressions—our personal, unique codes of language spoken in muscles and flesh. Yet these convey things universal, known to each one of us. A good painting will capture that unique expression and yet connect the viewer with something she already knows intimately and acutely.

Travel
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men [sic] and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
- Mark Twain in Innocents Abroad

Really an expansion of the first category, travel inspires me with fascination for the varieties of ways people live, dress, speak, wash clothes, locomote, eat—you name it. I have so much to learn from people who are different than me.
